What Is 2D Animation?

Animations created by manipulating flat, drawn characters and artwork from frame to frame to create the illusion of movement.

  • Uses flat, drawn characters and backgrounds rather than 3D computer modeling. The characters, objects and environments are all created by hand, usually on transparent sheets called cels.
  • Movement is achieved by manipulating the artwork frame by frame, similar to stop-motion animation. Slight changes are made to the characters and objects in each frame to create the illusion of movement when played sequentially.
  • Common techniques include hand-drawn animation, cutout animation (using pre-drawn character pieces moved around each frame), and stop-motion with physical objects and models.
  • Popular examples include classic Disney animated films, anime films and TV shows, South Park, Family Guy, Adventure Time and many children’s cartoons.
  • With the rise of 3D animation, 2D animation has become less common for feature films but is still widely used for television shows and lower-budget projects due to being cheaper and faster to produce than 3D.
